Ingrown toenails are caused by a conflict between the nail and the surrounding skin, resulting in the formation of corns and hard skin. This leads to inflammation (pain, redness, swelling) and sometimes infection if the nail is left untreated.
This condition is common in children, who have thin, sharp nails, but also when the nails are badly cut or torn off, when wearing shoes that are too narrow or when there is trauma to the nail, and finally when the natural shape of the nail is hypercurved or thickened.
Pain is the first warning sign, with the patient describing sensitivity to the simple pressure of the sheet on the toe at night. Next, the markers of inflammation are observed: redness, swelling, and sometimes a discharge of pus in the event of infection.
Most ingrown toenails can be treated without surgery. Our team is trained in this so-called conservative treatment. All treatments are carried out in accordance with current hygiene standards and guarantee maximum effectiveness thanks to our treatment method, which consists of releasing the nail conflict and, in some cases, fitting an orthonyx to ensure healing (a painless, non-surgical method designed to straighten the curvature of the nail).
The PODERM® method is an in-office treatment for ingrown toenails that does not require surgery. Our specialists use an instrument to remove the portion of the nail or horn causing the inflammation. In some cases, an orthonyx is applied to ensure that the nail grows back without recurrence, by reducing pressure and friction.
