Flat feet in children and adults

Flat feet are common in children, especially the very young. At birth, feet are naturally flat because the arch of the foot has not yet formed. This arch usually develops between the ages of 4 and 6, as the muscles and ligaments of the foot become stronger.
For most children, flat feet cause no pain or problems and often correct themselves with time and growth. However, if the flat foot persists or causes pain, a consultation with a podiatrist may be necessary.
In adults, flat feet can be caused by weak ligaments, injury or a medical condition such as arthritis. Unlike in children, flatfoot in adults is often permanent and can sometimes lead to foot, ankle or back pain, especially if the condition is left untreated. Treatments include wearing orthopaedic insoles and strengthening exercises.
