Hallux valgus is the most common pathology of the forefoot. It is a deformity of the first ray, i.e. the 1ᵉʳ metatarsal and the joint that connects it to the phalanx.
There are several stages, depending on the angle of deviation of the big toe. Hallux valgus can be very painful, both in the joint and on the skin, due to rubbing against the shoe when walking, which can lead to the formation of corns.
In the case of mild pain, wearing suitable footwear may be sufficient. A thorough examination of posture and footing will determine whether orthopaedic insoles are recommended or whether a corrective orthoplasty of the big toe is sufficient.
